The vast mirror of water reflects the solid white bulk of the Comares Tower. The slope of the white marble floors allows the water in the pool to reach right up to the plinths of the columns. So, it seems to floating on the water. This use of water to mirror a structure above was used some three centries later (1630-47) in the Taj Mahal at Agra, India.
